Hostiles (2017) is an American Western that both follows and dismantles traditional Western tropes. At Fort Berringer, soon-to-retire U.S. Army Captain Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) is ordered by President Harrison to escort the cancer-stricken and recently paroled Cheyenne war chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) and four members of his family back to their tribal lands in Montana. Blocker initially refuses as he and Yellow Hawk are old enemies from Indian Wars. What follows is a tale of brutality, racial hatred, moral evil, heroism—physical and moral, redemption, and restoration that will both continue as well as challenge the myth of the West. A truly outstanding Western that will raise questions about the morality and moral costs of violence, moral injury, the recovery of the soul, the American nature, and much else. Rosamund Pike, Jesse Plemons, and Timothee Chalamet star or support.
