Film Viewing and Discussion of “Munich”

July 12 @ 6:00 pm

Join IRD and Providence for a Christian Realist discussion of Munich. Munich is the 2005 Steven Spielberg exploration of Operation Kidon (Bayonet)–alternatively known as Operation Wrath of God–and the Mossad team sent into the cold to avenge the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics by the terrorist organization Black September, a splinter group of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Spielberg’s film focuses on the five-member hit team and, ultimately, the emotional and spiritual toll of vengeance, sometimes cast as cathartic violence. Some call Spielberg’s meditation a rather maudlin assertion that vengeance begets vengeance begets vengeance. Is it? And, more immediately relevant, what does Munich have to contribute to the discussion of the present-day fight in Israel? We will watch the movie at 6:30 PM. There will be a discussion led by Marc LiVecche following the film. There will be a light reception of movie theater snacks beforehand at 6:00 PM. Guests are welcome.
